Swyambhunath is located in a lovely little hill rock in Kathmandu, just few kilometers from Tribhuvan international airport. Most Tourist first choice to visit Swyambhunath temple, when they reached in Kathmandu. One can see nice view of Kathmandu Valley from here. The Swyambhunath Stupa is one of the most oldest, holy and religious buddhist shrine in Nepal and is an important Buddhist pilgrimage destination.The monument is believed to be self created and the history of the monument backs to the 5th Century. The temple is also known as the Monkey temple as there are holy monkeys living in parts of the temple. The temple area has several other temples and shrine some dating back to the Licchavi period and museum, library and Tibetan monastery.
As the stupa is among the oldest religious sites in Nepal, there are several myths that a lotus flower that bloomed in the middle of the Kathmandu which was a big lake at that time. Then the Lord Manjushree drained the water from the Kathmandu Valley and established the Lord Buddha in that lotus flower. The largest image of Gautam Buddha with two other Gods are situated in the west boundary side of Swayambhunath.
