Annapurna is the God of paddy. It has been believed that once upon a time a man was carrying Annapunra kalash on his back, when he reached Ason, he was tired enough for a break. He, for a moment, kept kalash (presently Annapurna Temple) to take rest. Having taken enough rest, he decided to walk for his destination, but when he tried to carry kalash back, he was not able to do so. He decided to leave the kalash in its place and performed a ritual puja and left for his destination. The Kalash remained there for years and presently Annapurna Temple was originated in this form. During full moon days, local people of Ason make the shape of Annapurna kalash with different kinds of food items which is very intriguing.
Besides Annapurna Temple, the most popular temple, the busiest & oldest shopping place in Kathmandu. The place has various shops where one can buy all kinds of goods, groceries, vegetables, spices, and other ingredients needed for worshiping Gods, and the ingredients needed for ritual works. The place holds the most number of shops and different customers and class people bringing warmly environment and friendly atmosphere. Ason is equally famed for its traditional and cultural lifestyle of the people. Some of the temples in Ason are Annapurna (or Asonmaru Ajima), Lord Ganesh, Stone Fish, Lord Narayan, Shree Kumari, Lord Uma-Maheshwore, and Chawoso Ajima.
Various religious parades and processions are passed through Ason that grabs a lot of people’s attention in that part of the town. There is always some sort of religious and cultural festivals entertained in Ason the whole year that keeps the local busy. Some of the Ason Tole’s own festivals are Asanchalan and God’s fighting (Dye Lwakegu, newari terminology). Ason has many courtyards (bahals) and some of them are named as Ason Baha, Dhalasikwa Baha etc. There are lots of organizations in Ason such as Annapurna Sewa Samiti, Leo club of Ason and so forth. People from different cultural background live in Ason. Newars are the most famous one and most of them are shopkeepers. Ason Tole is comparatively developed with facilities including hospital, colleges, schools, shopping complexes.
Stone Fish Temple: The myth about the Stone Fish Temple is also very intriguing one. Once there was a famous tantric who predicted that this Fish would fall just in front of Lord Ganesh Temple. However, his son, also a tantric, predicated that the factors such as wind would make the fish fall little bit left in front of Lord Ganesh Temple. The present observation proves that Tantric’s son must have won the predication. Many cultural festivals are entertained in Ason.
